Importing Used Household Goods and Personal Effects
If you’re moving to Australia, all household goods and personal effects must go through customs clearance. Ensuring you have the correct documents and meet the requirements will help avoid delays and extra costs.
Documents Required
Copy of Passport – Must include the photo and signature page.
Australian Customs Form B534 – Must be completed and signed exactly as in the passport.
Copy of Visa / e-Visa Approval – Required for non-citizens.
Detailed Inventory / Packing List – Must be in English.
Alcohol Inventory – If shipping alcohol, a detailed list is required for duty assessment.
Original Bill of Lading (OBL) / Air Waybill (AWB) – Required if no telex release or waybill has been issued.
Important Customs Rules
✅ Submission Deadlines
Sea Shipments: The OBL must be received at least 7 days before arrival at the first Australian port.
Air Shipments: The AWB must be received at least 48 hours before arrival at the first Australian airport.
✅ Customs Clearance Timelines
Sea Freight: Takes 12-15 working days, depending on the shipping method and destination.
Air Freight: Takes approximately 5-7 working days, based on documentation and location.
✅ Alcohol Duties & Taxes
Wine: Duties and taxes are approximately 50% of the purchase value.
Spirits: Duties and taxes can be up to 150% of the purchase value.
A detailed alcohol inventory is required for customs to assess duties.
